The San Benito County Arts Council recently announced a high school contest for Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest.
The competition is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great classic and contemporary poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. The local contest is presented in partnership with San Benito High School and the Aromas San Juan Unified School District.
The public is invited to attend the competition on Friday, February 2 at 6 p.m. at Anzar High School (Room 206) in San Juan Bautista to watch students from SBHS and Anzar compete in the county finals. Attendance is free and open to the public, although seating is limited.
The winner of the competition will advance to the California State Poetry Out Loud contest. From there, the state champion will advance to the national finals on May 3-4 in Washington, DC where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be distributed.
Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has reached over 3.3 million students and 50,000 teachers from 12,000 schools nationwide. This February, Poetry Out Loud will take place in San Benito County for the third time with support from the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation.
