Lifelong Hollister resident August C. Lavagnino died unexpectedly Sunday, April 20, 2003 at his home. He was 91.

Mr. Lavagnino was born in Hollister and attended San Benito High School and San Benito Junior College. He owned and operated the Hollister Public Drive-In Market (now Brothers Market) at South and San Benito streets for 25 years before going into real estate property management in 1968.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army, and a member of Old Mission San Juan Bautista, the Hollister Lodge No. 1436 BPOE, Sons In Retirement (SIRS), ICF of San Benito County and the Leslie L. Garratt Post 6359 VFW of San Juan Bautista.

He is survived by his children, James Lavagnino of Hollister, Louise Covert and her husband, Ray, of San Juan Bautista, and August John Lavagnino and his wife, Marian, of Fremont; his brothers and sisters, John and William Lavagnino and Rosemarie Caetano, all of San Juan Bautista, and Pearl Opie of Sonora; three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith L. Lavagnino, in December 1989; his second wife, Anna Sabbatini Lavagnino, in June 2001; and his brother, Charles Lavagnino, in December 1994.

Visitation will be Wednesday from noon until 5 p.m. at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. A vigil service will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Mission San Juan Bautista.

Family and friends will assemble at the mission Thursday at 9:30 a.m. to attend a Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the family plot at San Juan District Cemetery will military honors by Hollister Post 9242 and Leslie L. Garratt Post 6359 VFW.

Memorials are preferred to Jovenes de Antano in care of the funeral home.
