Authorities today are disposing of four major marijuana gardens of unknown size in south county, while Sheriff Curtis Hill noted how investigators have seized about 50,000 pot plants so far early in the eradication season.

Hill confirmed his office and others including the United Narcotics Enforcement Team had discovered the marijuana gardens about 70 miles south of Hollister. He said many officers are involved in the operation, but he could not confirm details about the size of the gardens.

He did say all the involved officers are safe and that no arrests have been reported yet as of 2 p.m.

Hill, meanwhile, pointed out that local authorities had eradicated the 50,000 plants this year while there usually are about 5,000 nabbed by this point. The sheriff said August and September are the “heavy” eradication months.

“That’s a big number for our county,” said Hill, referring to the 50,000 plants. “We’re way into the curve.”
