Local authorities are urging parents to be cautious and safe this Halloween while taking the little ones out trick-or-treating in San Benito County.
California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Armstrong, a public information officer for the agency’s Hollister-Gilroy area office, said he recommends parents wrap up early this year since Halloween falls on a school night. Armstrong said parents and children should stick to sidewalks and use a flashlight or bright clothing to increase visibility.
“Have an emergency plan if you get lost or scared,” Armstrong said.
Officer Rosie Betanio, a spokeswoman for the Hollister Police Department, said trick-or-treaters should remember to always look both ways before crossing the street, walk instead of run and stay in familiar neighborhoods.
“Ideally, young children of any age should be accompanied by an adult,” Betanio said.
San Benito County Undersheriff Pat Turturici said parents should carry a cell phone and kids should approach only the homes with lights and not go into cars to get candy.
“Stay in groups,” Turturici said.
Once again, Severinsen Street in Hollister will close to vehicle traffic from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, said Carol King, a resident whose house will have a pirate theme this year. Almost every Severinsen Street home will be decorated for Halloween this year, she said.
“Of course, all trick-or-treaters are welcome,” King said.
