Teaming up with Tiffany Ford last Saturday in a test-drive fundraiser, the Baler Backers Athletic Organization managed to raise between $2,700 and $2,800 for San Benito High School athletics, according to Baler Backers Secretary Kelly Sepulveda.
Organizers were hoping for a better turnout to the event, where Tiffany Ford was donating $20 to the Baler Backers for each test drive taken by the public.
There was a set maximum of 300 test drives to be allowed — meaning the Baler Backers could have raised, at most, $6,000 — but only 135 to 140 people were in attendance on Saturday at the parking lot of Andy Hardin Stadium.
“It’s more than $2,500 that wasn’t there last week,” Sepulveda said. “So that’s awesome.
“We’ll keep on going.”
The Balers Backers is trying to raise money for SBHS athletics, which is undergoing a $100,000 budget shortfall. If the athletic department cannot raise the funds, freshmen sports are expected to be cut from next year’s program.
Sepulveda said the non-profit organization’s next fundraiser will come during the winter sports season.
