The Baler girls were eighth out of 18 teams.

The Haybaler volleyball club was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Menlo-Atherton Midway Classic on Saturday, losing to host M-A 25-19, 25-22. The Balers defeated Soquel in the first round 25-18, 25-23.

In boys water polo, San Benito fell to Cupertino 10-8 in the 15th place game of the St. Francis Invitational on Saturday, despite five goals from Lucas Zepeda.

The Balers (6-12) went 0-4 in the tournament, but were in every game except a 13-4 loss to Sacred Heart Prep in Friday’s first round.

“We had a shot in every game but that one,” said Baler head coach Tom Agan. “We were close, but we’re not there quite yet.”

The most exciting game for the Balers was a 12-8 defeat to Palo Alto in overtime.

Agan called timeout with three seconds left in regulation to set up a play. Robbie Shattuck delivered the game-tying goal at 8-8. The Balers, who were down 5-0 at one point, were outscored 4-0 in the overtime period.

“It took us all we had just to get back into it,” said Agan.

Zach Bainter, just a junior, had a good offensive output in the tourney, scoring 10 goals.

Joel Smith had four goals in the loss to the Vikings and seven goals in the four games.

Goalie Nick Dain had 11 saves in an 11-7 setback to Los Gatos.

In a change in the schedule, the Baler boys host Monterey on Thursday, not Wednesday. The Baler girls play the Toreadores on Wednesday as the Tri-County Athletic League resumes.
