The San Benito freshman softball team got going early and earned a 8-4 win over Notre Dame.

The Haybalers scored three times in the first to gain the upper hand. Andrea Hernandez led off with a single and Lauren Adamek walked. Stephanie Young hit a ball to short to advance the runners and reached when the throw to first was bad.

Young stole second and Gina Lopez took the plate and hit a ball to short and reached as a run scored. With Lopez leading off fist, the pitcher hesitated and she took off for second. The throw beat her but was bobbled as she reached. Lopez then stole third, Francesca Duran was hit by a pitch before Alicia Chavez delivered an RBI single.

“The girls came into the game knowing that they can win,” coach Rebecca Gutierrez said. “They communicated, scored in the first inning, and played tight defense.”

Notre Dame got back in it with two runs in the third, but San Benito rebounded with three of its own in the fourth to make it 6-2.

The Spirits put a run on the board in the fifth, but were denied more when Duran made a diving catch on a fly ball hit to left field.

Notre Dame scored again in the sixth to make it 6-4, but the ‘Balers put it away with two runs in the top of the seventh.

Young, who went the distance in the circle, ended the game by leaving a runner stranded on first as Alyssa Cabral caught a fly ball in center field for the final out. Young allowed six hits, no walks and struck out three.
