The Hollister High boys golf team ran into a hot Palma team Thursday in the mid-season Tri-County Athletic Tournament at Ridgemark Golf Club.

While the Chieftains’ total of 145 was first out of six teams entered, the Balers placed second with a 154. Live Oak was third at 162 with Gilroy fourth at 166.

With four tri-team matches and Thursday’s six-teamer in the bag, the Balers lead with a total of seven points. The Mustangs are second with 8.5. Salinas and Palma are tied for third with nine, while the Acorns are fifth at 10.

“We really wanted to defend our home turf today,” said Baler golf coach Mitch Thomas. “But Palma was too good for us today.”

Three Palma players shot 35, 37 and 38, respectively.

The Balers were buoyed by a welcome 37 from Zach Zgragen and Matt Lopez, their two best scores of the year. Daniel Rivera and John Dempsey each carded 40’s. Chris Zubiaga (41) and Ian Hudson (42) had their score thrown out.

“Ian had a tough start with a triple bogey,” said Thomas. “That’s uncharacteristic of him. Matt really came through and so did Zach. They had been struggling so maybe this will get them going. We’re strong when everyone plays well, but when a couple of our guys have bad days, we can be beaten.”

The Balers return to tri-team matches next Tuesday at Ridgemark GC vs. Gilroy and Salinas.

Then it’s a match at Corral di Tierra against Salinas and Live Oak on Thursday.
