The Hollister High boys golf team hopes there is some kind of mathematical progression to the past three years.

Two years ago, the Balers took third in the Monterey Bay League. Last year, it was a second place finish in MBL.

The Balers take aim at the championship trophy Tuesday as the Tri-County Athletic League tournament takes place at Quail Lodge Country Club in Carmel Valley. Hollister’s No. 1 player Ian Hudson, who is third in the all-T-CAL standings, tees off at approximately noon. Other Balers to follow are John Dempsey, sixth in the league, Zach Zgragen (10th), Chris Zubiaga, Daniel Rivera and Matt Lopez.

As a team, the Balers are tied for first with Palma with 17 points. Gilroy has 20.5, while Salinas has 21.

“We should be up for the challenge,” said Baler head coach Mitch Thomas, in his third year. “We have a lot seniors playing and they are experienced.”

The top two teams qualify for the Central Coast Section Regional Tournament, which will be May 5-6 at Rancho Canada West. The league has lobbied for a third team to receive an at-large berth.

“The Monterey Bay League has two automatic bids and none of their teams can beat the top teams in our league,” said Thomas. “Our league rep is fairly sure we’ll have one at-large bid.”

The Balers are playing a practice round today at Quail Lodge.

“That way all of our kids have played the course,” added Thomas.
