Girls’ tennis falls to Salinas in season finale
A day after completing a perfect Tri-County Athletic League regular season, the San Benito boys’ water polo team won its first two games in the Monta Vista Tournament in Cupertino on Friday.
The ‘Balers defeated Woodside 17-4 and Harbor 21-10, improving their overall record to 15-7.
San Benito returns to Cupertino this morning for an 8am contest against Soquel, the likely champion of the Santa Cruz Athletic League. With a win, the ‘Balers would add to the power points that factor into Central Coast Section tournament seeding.
“They are going to be really tough,” San Benito coach Tom Agan said. “Basically, the way the points go, it’s not going to hurt anything to try.”
The ‘Balers wrap up the tournament by playing host Monta Vista at 1:50pm.
Following its road win against Gilroy on Thursday, San Benito (8-0 TCAL) earned the No. 1 seed in the league tournament and begins its pursuit of an outright TCAL Championship Friday.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
The San Benito girls’ tennis team completed its regular season with a 6-1 loss to Salinas at Ridgemark on Thursday.
The ‘Balers received their lone win from the No. 2 doubles team of Elena Fata and Abby Woods, a tandem that has proven to be one of the biggest strengths of the team this season. Fata and Woods won 7-6, 7-5 in what San Benito head coach Ed Cecena called “a really exciting doubles match, really a quality match.”
The ‘Balers finished 6-6 in Tri-County Athletic League matches.
San Benito (8-11) will send two singles players and two doubles teams to the TCAL Tournament, a two-day affair which begins Monday in Salinas.
JV BOYS’ WATER POLO
San Benito defeated host Gilroy 6-4 in a JV boys’ water polo match Thursday. With three goals, Ryan Whiteside led the ‘Balers.
