San Benito girls’ VB heads to tough tourney after another TCAL
romp
Hollister – After losing four consecutive matches, this one felt good for the San Benito girls’ tennis team. Fighting to finish the season with a .500 record in Tri-County Athletic League matches, the Lady ‘Balers swept Alvarez 7-0 at Ridgemark on Thursday.
“It’s good to get back on the winning track,” San Benito head coach Ed Cecena said.
The ‘Balers (7-10) won each of the matches in straight sets, with No. 1 singles player Amanda Marshall leading the way with her 6-1, 6-0 victory. San Benito also enjoyed particular success in the doubles matches. The No. 2 team of Elena Fata and Abby Woods won 6-0, 6-1, and the No. 3 pair of Athena Hernandez and Courtney Fisher prevailed 6-1, 6-1.
At 5-5 in league play, San Benito has two matches remaining. The ‘Balers face Alisal first next week, and then wrap up their season by hosting powerful Salinas.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Bring on the tough competition. After yet another resounding triumph over a TCAL foe Thursday night, the San Benito girls’ volleyball team should have a much more challenging task ahead as it plays in the Panther Challenge at Presentation High in San Jose this weekend.
The Lady ‘Balers ran their league record to 9-0 with a 25-5, 25-8, 25-9 victory over Alvarez in Hollister, improving to 23-4 overall.
San Benito faces Santa Cruz, Aragon and St. Mary’s (Berkeley) in pool play on Saturday. Mitty, St. Francis and host Presentation lurk as potential opponents should the ‘Balers continue their winning ways.
