Boys win 16-4, girls prevail 19-7; Lady ‘Balers host tournament
starting Friday
The San Benito water polo teams registered a clean sweep of their Robert Louis Stevenson counterparts on Wednesday, winning in the boys’ and girls’ varsity and JV divisions in Hollister.

Both ‘Baler varsity squads extended their undefeated starts to the Tri-County Athletic League season with big wins. The boys won 16-4, and the girls prevailed 19-7 in matches that quickly got out of hand.

“It’s tough being on the receiving end of it, but (the Pirates) just weren’t at our level,” San Benito boys’ coach Tom Agan said. “You name it – we’re out-swimming ’em, we’re out-passing ’em, playing better defense … it’s everything.”

James Schafer posted four goals and two assists for the ‘Balers (11-4, 5-0 TCAL), David Smith scored four times, and Jason Andrade and Rory Bloch both notched two goals.

Tied at 4 after one quarter, the Lady ‘Balers (12-2, 5-0 TCAL) made a defensive adjustment that turned the match completely in their favor. With junior Katie Buzzetta moving to guard RLS star Sierra Burton, who scored four times, San Benito used better defense to amp up its offense the rest of the way.

Jayme Telles scored five times to lead the ‘Balers, and Kirsten Palm had four goals.

The Lady ‘Balers host a tournament this weekend that includes Live Oak, Salinas and Presentation. San Benito opens play Friday in a 12pm match against San Lorenzo Valley.

The San Benito varsity boys next play on Oct. 13 at the Live Oak Tournament.

The ‘Baler JV girls won their match 9-8, and the JV boys prevailed 13-8.
