‘Baler golfers take 3rd at Del Monte GC
The San Benito girls’ tennis team knew that this week would be its toughest test with visits to Tri-County Athletic League powers Salinas and Notre Dame. After falling 7-0 to Salinas on Tuesday, the ‘Balers know they likely need to defeat the Spirits Thursday to have a chance at the league crown and resulting CCS bid.
“They spanked us pretty good,” ‘Balers head coach Ed Cecena said after his team was swept by the Cowboys.
San Benito No. 1 singles player Amanda Marshall and No. 2 Lizzy Gatto had the best matches for the visitors, falling 7-5, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-1, respectively. Cecena was hopeful that their strong first sets would bode well for the team as San Benito (6-7, 4-2 TCAL) faces a Notre Dame squad it earlier suffered a 7-0 loss to.
“You know, we’ve got to get past this and look forward to Notre Dame,” Cecena said.
GIRLS’ GOLF
Playing in a six-team Tri-County Athletic League competition at Monterey’s Del Monte Golf Course Tuesday, the San Benito girls’ golf team finished third by shooting a combined 198.
Marissa Gutierrez led the way for the ‘Balers with her 41. With traditional No. 2 Ashley Bushaw ill, Katie O’Brien stepped in to card a 53. Jordan Archer and freshman Carly DiDomenico fired rounds of 52 for San Benito.
Santa Catalina dominated the event with its round of 164. Pacific Grove (192) was the only other team in front of the ‘Balers.
San Benito returns to action by hosting Monte Vista Christian at Ridgemark on Thursday at 3pm.
