San Benito girls tennis had little problem at Gonzales Friday as
they blanked the Spartans 7-0. All of the Baler wins were in
straight sets. Winners in singles were Jill Merrigan (6-3, 6-0);
Tiffany Davies (6-1, 6-0); Jamie Huston (6-0, 6-0); Megan Kirk
(6-1, 6-0). In doubles, Mary Beth Miller and Cathry Villarico won
6-0, 6-0; Sheryl Overman/Kathryn Nieto (6-0, 6-2) and Tracy
Hopkins/Alyssa Panacho (6-0, 6-0).

The Balers were downed by Harbor in Santa Cruz last Wednesday by a 5-2 score. The two Baler victories came from Sheryl and Sheila Overman 6-3, 3-6, (10-3 tiebreak) and Villarico and Huston 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 and 3 doubles, respectively.

The Baler ledger now stands at 3-1.

“We could have been 4-0,” lamented Baler tennis coach Ed Cecena. “Some of the matches we lost at Harbor I thought we could have won.”

San Benito is at Aptos this afternoon at 3:30 p.m…..

Lucas Zepeda drove home seven goals as the Baler boys water polo team defeated Lynbook 9-3 in the first match of the Paly Invitational last Friday in San Jose. Zepeda, only a junior, scored 12 goals for the tourney, in which the Balers went 2-3.

San Benito ended a long Saturday with a 7-5 decision over Monta Vista (Cupertino). In between its two victories, the Balers lost a close 8-6 contest to Menlo-Atherton on Friday, then were handled 10-0 by Bellarmine Saturday morning. A tired Baler team fell to Los Gatos 13-8 Saturday afternoon.

“We were pooped,” said Baler coach Tom Agan. “We didn’t have much left.”

Other Balers who scored this past weekend were Zach Bainter (4 goals), Ben Diedrich (3 goals), Joel Smith (2 goals), Sean Russell (5 goals), David Smith (3 goals) and Robbie Shattuck (1 goal).

The Balers host Salinas this Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in a Tri-County Athletic League match…

The Baler cross-country team took part in the Robert Louis Stevenson Relays on Saturday with each member of a five-runner team running 1.5 miles. The Baler first team placed fourth in the large schools division, while the Baler girls were sixth. The Baler JV boys placed first.

The Baler harriers are at a T-CAL jamboree this afternoon at Toro Park.
