Seaside – San Benito remained perfect in preseason play with a 25-23, 25-17, 25-22 victory Tuesday evening.

San Benito (3-0) has won all nine games in its first three matches so far. New head coach Jennifer Beall attributes the team’s success in large part to its resiliency.

“They don’t seem to buckle on the pressure,” Beall said. “They don’t point fingers at each other. Wherever they are – on the floor or on the bench – they all work together as a team. We had a lot of people doing some really intelligent things at the right time down the stretch.”

San Benito was down 11-4 in the first game before rallying to win. The Balers picked it up in the second game and were able to win fairly easily. In the third game, San Benito took a big lead, but Seaside was able to come back.

“They were really strong defensively,” Beall said. “We came out really slow, not really expecting they would be as good as they were.”

Chelsea Fowles had a strong setting game with 27 assists. Kat McCullough had eight kills and three aces. Leslie Schipper had eight kills and nine digs. Alyssa Fowles had seven kills and no hitting errors.

Jaimie Temperino had four kills on four attempts and added three blocks. Emily Kortsen had three kills and two blocks. And Michelle Sanchez had seven digs and played strong defensively.

The Balers will be leaving Thursday for the Reno tournament, which begins Friday.

San Benito was not able to compete in the Milpitas volleyball tournament last weekend because of a miscommunication. Beall plans to make up the games during a tournament at Presentation High in October.
