It could have been worse, but it could have been better for the Hollister High wrestling team at the Turlock Invitational on Saturday.

The Balers took eighth place with 60-plus points, placing four wrestlers. Host Turlock won the tournament with Hughson second.

Octavio Lucatero finished the highest of any Baler when he took second at 140 pounds. Jamie Driskill, just a sophomore, was fourth at 119. Tito Flores was sixth in the heavyweight division, while Brent Kelsey was eighth at 130 pounds.

“It was a little disappointing because we had six or eight matches where we were up by five points and lost the match late in the third period,” said Baler head coach Matt Olejnik.

The Balers welcome Salinas in a Tri-County Athletic League match Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Cowboys feature Marcus Pettis, who won the Central Coast Section at 121 pounds last year. Pettis transferred from Alvarez before the year started.

“I’m not sure what to expect of Salinas,” said Olejnik. “They didn’t have a program last year.”

Olejnik is more concerned about his own team.

“In years past, we’ve had more commitment,” he said. “We had guys missing practice over Christmas vacation. We need to be more dedicated to the program.”

The Balers are at the Arcata Tournament this Saturday.

Other Baler sports highlights

The Hollister High girls basketball team defeated Alisal 59-43 on the road on Friday.

The Balers (10-3) were led by Gina Caianiello’s 19 points. Jennifer Tremblay came off the bench for 13 big points and nine rebounds, while Trisha Lee had 10.

Hollister is at Monte Vista Christian on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
