San Jose – San Benito achieved a season-long goal of breaking 200 as the Haybalers beat Sobrato 199-219 in a non-league match Tuesday at Cinnabar Hills.

Chad Stanger paced the effort by shooting even-par 36, tying him for medalist honors with Sobrato’s Gary Leung.

“We played really well,” ‘Balers coach Andy Parra said. “This is a tough course, too.”

Joey Amaral followed with a 38, Darrel Aton shot 39, Nolan Filice scored a 41, and Robbie Sanchez and Josh Greenwood both had 45s.

“Each match somebody comes through with a really low score and it has been a lot of different guys,” Parra said.

The ‘Balers hope for this season-best round to be a momentum builder as they prepare for the final two league tournaments, following by the league finals.

“You want your best golf to be at the end,” Parra said. “We want to play the best golf we can right now. The kids are starting to make that transition.”

San Benito returns to action April 19 when it hosts the Tri-County Athletic League tournament at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.

Anzar 235, North Salinas 257

Salinas – Anzar is getting a taste of TCAL competition this week and after Tuesday’s results, it had to enjoy its experience.

The Hawks, paced by junior Erik Olson, had no problems beating North Salinas 235-257.

Olson carded a score of 45 to take medalists honors in the match at Salinas Country Club.

The competition will step up a bit today when Anzar hosts Salinas at San Juan Oaks. The Cowboys are currently tied for second with Gilroy in the TCAL standings.

The Hawks are fifth in the Mission Trail Athletic League, which features Monterey area powerhouses Pacific Grove, Carmel and Robert Louis Stevenson.

Nick Tanouye was right behind Olson in the win over North Salinas with his score of 46. Tim Trefts, Ira Ellison and Travis Williams all fired 48 to round out the scoring.
