San Benito bounced back from an early deficit to defeat North Salinas 51-43 in Salinas Wednesday night.
“Our girls are playing with a tremendous amount of heart which is all any coach can ask from a team,” said Baler coach Tom Dean.
The Haybalers were down 24-19 at the half and 34-31 at the end of the third quarter. But in the final frame, San Benito went on a 20-9 run to pull away. The Balers took the lead with six minutes left and never gave it up.
“We changed defenses at the half which slowed them down and caused them to shoot more from the outside,” Dean said. “But the shots they took were not good looks like they were getting in the first half. They also got tired in the later part of the game which affected their shooting.”
Dani Andrewson and Johni Kieswetter did a good job defending North Salinas’ top scorer, Dean said. Trisha Lee led the Balers with 10 points. Cortney Almaguer had eight points, Jaime Hall and Kieswetter had six, Andrewson had five, Mallorie Wilson had four, Jaime Flores and Cristina Osborne had three and Kristina Leal and Ashley Patton each had two points.
The game was the first game for Tatjanh Schiwek, a 6-foot-2 foreign exchange student from Germany. She picked up her first rebound as a Baler but didn’t have any points.
The Balers (16-4, 3-0 TCAL) will play visiting Salinas on Friday night. A win could set up a potential first-place match against Notre Dame, who defeated Gilroy Wednesday night.
