It’s the home stretch for the San Benito boys volleyball team, and although it had been nine days since their previous match, the Haybalers showed little rust to kick off the second half of the season Thursday.

“The guys had fun,” San Benito head coach Luis Espinoza said.

“To have a win at the beginning of the second part of the season, it feels good.”

With all-around performances from Luis Bradley, Brian Hawks, Jakob Rice and the Rodriguez brothers, Erik and Adrian, San Benito continued its sweep streak at Alisal with a 3-0 win (25-8, 25-10, 25-14) Thursday in Salinas.

The ‘Balers, having won each and every Tri-County Athletic League match by a 3-0 margin this season, improve to 8-0 in the TCAL, 17-7 overall.

“As a coach you want to make sure you don’t overwhelm the kids,” Espinoza said.

“It was the first time I saw them out there having fun. The first game they took it serious, but the second and third games they had fun.”

Luis Bradley delivered five digs, seven kills and a team-high five service aces, while Brian Hawks had seven kills and two blocks. Erik Rodriguez had a team-high 10 kills, two blocks and an ace, and Adrian supplied 35 assists, two blocks and an ace.

Jakob Rice had seven kills and a team-high three blocks, while Alex Alvarez delivered a team-high 18 digs.

The ‘Balers, with just six matches remaining, will continue the second half of the season Tuesday at home to Seaside (3-5 TCAL, 5-11), a “scrappy” team Espinoza has plenty of respect for.

“We have to put the ball down,” he said.

Match time is 6:30 p.m.
