San Benito beats Gilroy, falls to MVC
The San Benito boys tennis team split a pair of matches Monday and Tuesday, starting the week off with a 4-3 win over Gilroy and then dropping a 5-2 decision to Monte Vista Christian.

The Haybalers now stand at 2-2 on the league season.

Derek Panger had a strong pair of matches at No. 2 singles, winning both in straight sets. He beat Gilroy’s Matt Chan 6-2, 6-2 and MVC’s Cory Klindt 6-2, 6-1.

San Benito’s No. 3 doubles team of Jon Rudolfs and DJ Nielson earned the only other victory against MVC, beating James Klindt and Dean Trando 7-5, 6-3.

Michael Coffey battled both of his opponents tough at No. 1 singles before falling. Against Gilroy’s undefeated Ben Wilson, he lost the first set 6-2, won the second set 6-3, but dropped the third 10-6. Coffey also went three sets against MVC’s Aaron Shapiro, but lost.

Mark Tobias split his matches at No. 3 singles, with his win coming in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, over Gilroy’s Sal Epoenechimco.

The ‘Balers also picked up win against Gilroy at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Alan Guttirrez and Conner Bray won 6-1, 6-4 and Michael Labuguen and Austin Pan gutted out a 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 victory.
