The San Benito girls basketball team stayed close throughout, but couldn’t make the final push and fell on the road Monday to Notre Dame 44-38.

The Haybalers and Spirits were tied at 20 at halftime, but Notre Dame was able to edge San Benito by three in each of the last two quarters to win.

The Tri-County Athletic League’s leading scorer Vanessa Farias scored 13 points but Elena Fata was limited to seven points as the ‘Balers offense was slowed down.

“They slowed us down,” San Benito coach Al Rowe said. “And we were just not boxing out. They got a lot of offensive boards, that really hurt us. We were getting a lot of shots off, they just weren’t falling.”

Notre Dame attacked the ‘Balers from the start and got them in foul trouble. By halftime, San Benito’s Fata, Megan Halstead and Kelsey Russel were all in foul trouble.

Katie O’Brien stepped up with a strong night, scoring seven points. Halstead chipped in with eight.

“They took it right out us, that was one of their strategies,” Rowe said.

The ‘Balers will try to return to the win column Wednesday when they travel to face Gilroy at 7pm.

Salinas – San Benito couldn’t muster any offense and lost to Alvarez 1-0 on the road Monday.

“We had control of the game,” coach Juan Carlos Martinez said. “We had a lot of chances.”

The loss dropped the ‘Balers to 3-10-2 overall and 2-6-1 in TCAL play.

Both defenses played well and the game was scoreless at halftime.

In about the 60th minute, the Eagles scored when their forward beat two San Benito defenders and punched in the goal.

The ‘Balers best opportunity came when Allan Nieves had a shot in front, but Alvarez’s goalkeeper made a touch to tap the ball away and keep San Benito scoreless.

“We could’ve won, it was just some bad luck,” Martinez said.

The ‘Balers return to action Wednesday at home when they host Alisal.
