Hollister – There will be fun and games, and the Balers will be feeling the beat. And yes there will even be a football game.

Tonight’s game against Live Oak will be the finale in a long week of preparation in the annual homecoming celebration at San Benito High School.

Teachers and students have been working diligently and celebrating homecoming week by preparing floats, painting signs and even dressing up. There has been something new each day of the week at the school.

Monday was PJ day, Tuesday was hat day, Wednesday was twin day and Thursday was class color day (freshmen – green, sophomore – purple, juniors – blue, seniors – black, and staff – white). Today, the campus will be flooded with red and white for spirit day.

“As long as the rain holds off, it will be good,” said assistant principal Krystal Lomanto. “There is lots of excitement this week. The students are just as enthused as last year. It doesn’t matter what year it is, it is going to be a gigantic job. We are very lucky at San Benito High to have students willing to put in the work to make homecoming a unique experience.”

“We started as far back as a month ago,” said Rally Club advisor Erma Albright. “It is not necessarily easier, but I have a heads up on deadlines. It builds up the night before. I look forward to the parade most of all.”

Corryn Pacheco, a senior and last year’s Rally Club president, is also heading up the event this year.

Even officials from Sonora High plan to come down to steal ideas for their homecoming.

No one will be thinking of classes during the shortened day today. The homecoming rally begins at 12:50pm, and the downtown parade follows at 1:35pm.

Rain has put a little damper on the activities, but it wasn’t enough to dampen the spirits, said Student Activities Director Juan Robledo.

“All the classes have been competing this week,” Robledo said. “It’s amazing what they do to their walls. Its getting more competitive all the time.”

Due to a break in the water main near the high school, the parade route had to be modified. The parade will probably turn left on Richardson Drive instead of left on Palmtag Drive as originally planned, Robledo said.

After the JV game ends and before the varsity game at 7:30pm, there will be a parade with all the class floats, the grand marshals and the royalty.

The game ball will be brought in by the fire department. There will be a short ceremony honoring former 2001 graduate and former Baler football player Josh “Bubba” Horn, who passed away in his sleep at the end of last school year. The band will be playing tunes from Braveheart in his honor. Chase Grave, who is wearing No. 55, the jersey Horn wore, will be presenting his parents with a gift.

The queen will be announced during halftime, but the homecoming king won’t be announced until Saturday’s semi-formal dance at O’Donnell Gym in order to allow football players to participate. During halftime, the band will be playing, and there will also be a fireworks show.
