Playing against several of the top ranked teams in the Central Coast Section, the best the San Benito volleyball team could hope for was some valuable experience.

So despite going 0-4 in the Aptos Spring Fling on Saturday, Haybalers coach Luis Espinoza was encouraged about the team’s future.

“It was a tough one,” Espinoza said of the tournament where San Benito was swept in matches by Bellarmine, Homestead, Aptos and Monterey. “We gained some huge experience. … They did better than what I expected.”

The ‘Balers were led by Luis Rosales, who had 15 kills in the tournament despite seeing action at the setter position. Sterling Wilson recorded six aces.

Espinoza said the team needs to shore up its defense and he’s confident they can do that and find success.

“We just need to fix a few things and it all has to do with defense,” he said. “It all comes down to blocking the other team’s ball so we have a chance to score and that didn’t happen.”

San Benito begins the league season a week from today when it travels to face rival Gilroy at 6:30pm.

“I can’t wait for next Tuesday when we go to Gilroy,” Espinoza said. “That’ll be a fun match. It always is when we play Gilroy.”
