The Haybaler girls basketball team came out strong during Friday
night’s Tri-County Athletic League opener at Live Oak and cruised
to a 49-28 win.
The Balers (14-4, 1-0 TCAL) jumped to a 20-2 lead in the first
quarter, consistently pressuring Live Oak and forcing
turnovers.

The Haybaler girls basketball team came out strong during Friday night’s Tri-County Athletic League opener at Live Oak and cruised to a 49-28 win.
The Balers (14-4, 1-0 TCAL) jumped to a 20-2 lead in the first quarter, consistently pressuring Live Oak and forcing turnovers.
“We came out and took control of the game in the first quarter,” said Baler coach Tom Dean. “Live Oak made us work for everything we got after that. They threw everything in the book at us defensively.”
“I think we played a little scared (in the first quarter),” said Acorn coach Richard Silva. “We were a little intimidated in their 3-2 zone. He’s got the horses.”
The Acorns made some changes in the second and third quarters to keep pace, but the early lead was too much for them to overcome.
“We had a little trouble at the end of the first half with the half-court trap,” Dean said. “We made an adjustment at halftime and had no trouble after that.”
Ten of the Balers’ 12 players scored in the contest. Jamie Hall got down low with ease against the much smaller Acorn team to score a game high of 17 points. And Trisha Lee had 12 points.
The Balers used their size to block eight shots and haul in 41 rebounds (22 offensive). Most of the Acorns’ shooting attempts were from outside.
Hall also led the team with 13 rebounds. Mallorie Wilson had eight. Ashley Patton and Cortney Almaguer each had five, while Christina Osborne had four.
“It was again a solid team effort by all,” Dean said. “The girls came out ready to play. I have to say thank you to all of them for the effort they are putting out right now.”
There was no handshake or even words exchanged between Baler coach Tom Dean and former Baler coach Richard Silva, who accuses Dean of going behind his back to take his job.
“The way he undermined me was not appreciated,” Silva said. “I don’t need to speak to that man, and I don’t need to have any thing to do with that that man.”
Dean denied that he did any scheming to take Silva’s job and offered his praise for the job he is doing this year.
“He is doing a good job over there with the girls,” Dean said. “They were just outgunned by us. It is tough because they always lose a lot of kids to the private schools, and he has been forced to bring up two freshmen for the varsity so he would have enough players.”
The Balers will be at Gilroy on Thursday.
“I am telling the girls to treat it like a CCS playoff game,” Dean said. “Maybe we can knock them out before the playoffs even start.”
