The Balers were shutout by Gilroy 7-0 Thursday at the Ridgemark Tennis Center. No Baler or Balers won a set.

“Gilroy’s one of the top two teams in the league, along with Notre Dame,” said Cecena, whose Balers are 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League.

The Mustangs (4-0, 2-0) face the Spirits next Tuesday in Gilroy in an early showdown.

“We’ll see what happens,” said Mustangs coach Jennifer Yoder. “We have some good young players. We’ll see how far we’ve progressed on Tuesday.”

The Balers were missing two of their top 10 players in sophomore Jamie Huston and junior Mary Von Urff. Both were at the San Benito County Fair showing animals.

Right down the line, Jill Merrigan lost at No. 1 singles 2-6, 1-6; Vanessa Martinez fell at No. 2 singles 0-6, 1-6; Tiffany Davies was blanked at No. 3 singles 0-6, 0-6; Megan Kirk played well in the second set at No. 4 singles bowing 0-6, 4-6.

Becky Bonner and Mary Beth Miller couldn’t get untracked at No. 1 doubles, losing 0-6, 2-6.

“A lot of our shots were just four to six inches out, while theirs were just in,” said Miller.

At No. 2 doubles, Cathry Villarico and Alyssa Penacho were downed 2-6, 3-6, while twins Sheryl and Sheila Overman, two first-year seniors, battled in the first set before losing 4-6, 0-6.

The Balers entertain North Salinas next Tuesday at the RTC.
