GILROY –– The San Benito cross country team wrapped up the league portion of the schedule with an easy victory over the short handed Gilroy Mustangs on Monday afternoon.

Although the Balers were mostly running against themselves Monday, Baler coach Jess Morales wanted his team to get some experience on the course for next year.

“Out of all the years I’ve been around kids, this is the hardest working group I have had,” Morales said. “I have seen a big difference from the beginning of the season to now. The boys and girls have done everything I expected of them. It is a sign of a good team if you are still stepping up. We’re learning how to race.”

The Balers are currently in second place behind Salinas, who beat the team by five points early in the season.

San Benito is still eyeing that Tri-County Athletic League title. But in order to get there, the Balers will have to get by the Cowboys in the league finals Nov. 1 at Toro Park.

“We have a good chance to win,” Morales said. “We have been working hard. The best team will win. We are still young so hopefully we will put it together. Something good will come out of it regardless of the outcome. They will at least get the experience from a good meet. The kids are getting energized about it.”

Gilroy is rebuilding the program this year and was unable to field full teams in most of the brackets. In the only scored match, the San Benito boys varsity team won 17-43.

“Gilroy is a lot better than what people think,” Morales said. “They are working hard on rebuilding the program. The coach is doing a good job. They are young but are doing good.”

The Balers will continue training this week and next week for the finals.

“We just have to keep our spirits high and stay together as a team and work together as a team,” Morales said. “I just want to stay healthy.”
