Zanella, Ruiz and Burley pour in 37 points combined, beat
Everett Alvarez 62-55
Hollister
The shorthanded San Benito boys basketball team managed to get 37 points from Tyler Ruiz, Dominic Zanella and Kevin Burley Wednesday night as they defeated visiting Everett Alvarez 62-55 at Mattson Gym in Hollister.
Zanella led the Haybalers with 13 points, while Ruiz and Burley each added 12 points apiece for San Benito, which improves to 8-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 18-7 overall.
The win also allows the ‘Balers to keep pace with North Salinas and Palma, which both won their games Wednesday night against Gilroy and Alisal, respectively.
San Benito was without the services of Brian Haggett, the team’s leading scorer. Haggett was out of the lineup Wednesday with an illness.
“It hurt us a little bit,” coach John Becerra said. “But we had the lead most of the time. It gets a little nerve-racking when they’re within six to eight points, but a lot of kids played and a lot of kids contributed.”
The ‘Balers had nine different scorers against the Eagles, which fall to 2-8 in the TCAL.
Matt Baker contributed a game-high 16 points for Everett Alvarez. However, defensively, San Benito’s Tim Von Urff held Eagle Preston Juarez, the team’s third leading scorer with nearly 10 points a game, to just four points on the night.
The ‘Balers have two games remaining, and currently occupy second place in the TCAL.
On Friday, they’ll play at Alisal. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
