The San Benito High boys water polo team compiled a 1-2 record at the Monterey Bay Invitational last weekend in Hollister, where it lost to Leland (17-7) and Carmel (17-6) before picking up its only victory against San Lorenzo Valley (18-5).

The tournament was learning experience, said head coach Tom Agan, whose Baler squad made many mistakes in what was the team’s season opener.

San Benito’s very first game of the 2009 season came against Leland, which eventually won the Invitational tournament last Saturday. Josh Schafer and Nick Angulo each had three goals apiece, but Leland’s 17 goals scored was the clear difference en route to the sizable 17-7 victory.

Carmel then posted a 17-6 win on San Benito in its following match, which saw Angulo have a five-goal game.

The Balers scored its first victory of the season when it easily downed SLV by an 18-5 margin. Schafer led the team with five goals, while Angulo and Nathan Thomas each added four scores apiece.

Keeper Trevor Agan combined for 12 saves in the tournament, and Tyler Agan, Josh McIntyre and Joe Larson each had two goals total. Jarret Barrios had one.

San Benito (1-2) will host Gilroy Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
