The San Benito baseball team reached the 20-win plateau for the third straight season and in the process advanced to the consolation championship of the Valley Christian/San Jose Sharks Crown Classic with a 10-4 win Tuesday over James Logan.

“We won and it’s our 20th win, but we have to do a better job playing with lot more energy and enthusiasm,” Haybalers coach Michael Luna said. “I thought by giving them Sunday and Monday off, we’d be a little more energized.”

San Benito was hitless for the first four innings, but took advantage of the Colts wildness to score twice in the first.

With one out, Kolton Klauer and Brian Haggett walked and Kevin Medeiros was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Klauer scored on a wild pitch and Justin Andrade delivered an RBI groundout to make it 2-0.

Logan fought back in the bottom of the inning, scoring an unearned run to cut into the lead.

In the fifth, the ‘Balers finally broke through. Medeiros laced a hit off the wall, but settled for a single when he injured his hamstring running to first base. Andrade then reached on a drag bunt, Ronnie Fhurong walked and with the infield in, Kyle Zozaya blooped a single over the second baseman to drive in a run.

Bryan Scott delivered the big blow with a two-run double to make it 5-1. Kevin Gonzales added a sacrifice fly to plate a run, and Zach Canez executed a suicide squeeze for the final run of the inning.

The Colts made things interesting with a three-run fifth in the final inning pitched by ‘Balers starter Fhurong.

But San Benito got those runs back in the sixth. Fhurong hit a sacrifice fly to score one run, another scored on an error and the final run came on a RBI single by Gonzales.

Fhurong improved to 3-0 with his five innings of work and Steve Cabral pitched the final two scoreless innings.

The ‘Balers will face Santa Cruz at 3:30pm Friday at Valley Christian in the consolation finals.
