Salinas – The San Benito girls volleyball team is breathing a big sigh of relief after Wednesday’s matchup with Salinas to remain tied with Notre Dame for first place.
San Benito won 20-25, 25-21, 25-20,18-25, 15-13. Coach Jennifer Beall said she knew it would be a close match after the way the teams competed the last time they met in Hollister.
“It was really really Intense,” Beall said. “I tried to prepare them for that. It was a really nerve-racking game. If we want to meet our goals, we have to continue to win.”
A hitting error in the fifth game gave the Cowboys a point. But San Benito was able to win it on the with their serve receive.
Alyssa Fowles had her best offensive game of the season with a season high of 22 kills. She also had 19 digs and two blocks. She had just five errors in 59 attempts.
“She started of f the game slow maybe because she was overexcited,” Beall said. “She was playing around the block really effectively and hitting the ball well.”
JT Temperino also had a strong game with eight kills and two blocks, and Lesslie Schipper had 11 kills and 13 digs. Kat McCullough had seven kills, three blocks and 14 digs. Michelle Sanchez had 18 digs and two aces.
“We didn’t serve that well,” Beall said. “We had way to many mistakes. You can’t do that against Salinas because they are so good. We won’t beat Notre Dame that way.”
Salinas was coming off of a loss against Live Oak, who has won five consecutive games before losing to Notre Dame in three Wednesday night. San Benito (27-7 6-1 TCAL) finishes the season with games against both teams.
