Hollister – If Carmel is anything like Tri-County Athletic League powerhouses Notre Dame and Salinas, the San Benito Lady ‘Balers will be sitting pretty come the end of the season.

Girls tennis Coach Ed Cecena said this week’s non-league matches against Carmel and Aptos will give the Lady ‘Balers a good idea of where they stand, as Carmel and Aptos are usually stocked with tennis talent, and are comparable to Salinas and Notre Dame.

On Wednesday, San Benito won round one, defeating Carmel 6-1 at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister. Round two will come today, when the Lady ‘Balers will host Aptos at Ridgemark.

“It was a good match. It was the first time we’ve ever beaten Carmel, so it was an excellent win for us,” Cecena said. “It was a hot day again, and everyone handled the heat very well. I was really impressed with the victory.”

In singles, Lady ‘Baler Amanda Marshall fell to Gabi Downer 6-7, 6-3 and 9-7 in the third-set tiebreaker. Teammate Yumi Chang, though, returned the favor and defeated Padre Jackie Roberts 6-2, 7-6.

No. 3 singles player Abby Woods defeated Carmel’s Julia Modorsky 6-2, 7-6, while San Benito’s Kaitlyn O’Keefe also won in two sets, beating Lucy Anderle 6-0, 7-5.

In doubles, No. 1 pair Rachel Maheu and Elena Fata defeated Elizabeth Butt and Lauren Michaels 6-4, 7-5, and Lady ‘Balers Crystal Perreira and Marisa Ibarra upended Lily Bodeney and Kathy Wilkin 6-1, 6-4. Rounding out the doubles teams were San Benito’s Rachel Smith and Bri Ahumada-Wolfsmith, who won their match 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.

The Lady ‘Balers (3-0) will look to remain undefeated when they take on Aptos today at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club. The match is slated for 3:30pm.
