Sophie Coelho has picked up from where she left off.

Last year’s leading scorer for San Benito and second leading scorer in the Tri-County Athletic League, Coelho scored a hat trick in the first 17 minutes Friday and led the Lady ‘Balers to a 6-1 win over Seaside.

Seaside, a member of the Monterey Bay Athletic League, likely didn’t know what hit them when San Benito scored their first goal just 50 seconds into the game.

“Textbook,” coach Mike Schurig said of the start. The Lady ‘Balers used passing and space to find Janessa Gillies on the outside, who crossed it to Coelho for the game’s first goal. “We’ve really been concentrating on our passing and our ball control and they did that. We played better against them than we did last time.”

Last year, San Benito beat Seaside 3-0, while the year before they edged the Spartans 3-2.

After the opening-minute score, Coelho pocketed two unassisted goals at the 8th minute and the 17th minute. Trailing 3-0, Seaside got on the scoreboard at the 22nd minute.

Just six minutes later, though, Samantha Moreno scored unassisted at the 28th minute to put the Lady ‘Balers ahead 4-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Coelho assisted two goals, both to Yaira Lizarraga, in the 48th and 69th minute.

Although they scored one goal, Seaside only had four shots on net, and two of them went over the net. Keeper Emily Key had one save in the first half, while backup Kelli Shingai had one save in the second half.

“You wonder how everything is going to gel,” said Schurig regarding the first game, “and I felt really good about it … What works is passing. We win as a team. It was definitely exciting.”

San Benito (1-0-0) will have 10 days off before they’ll play at Monte Vista Christian on Nov. 26 at 3:30 p.m.

“They’re a tougher opponent,” Schurig said. “That’ll be a better telltale sign.”

In other news, the San Benito junior varsity team won 4-0 against Seaside on Friday.

After holding a slim 1-0 margin at halftime, the Lady ‘Balers blew the game open with three goals in the second half.

Diana Lopez, Jessica Castro, Monique Lassaga and Elizabeth Moreno scored the goals for San Benito.

The JVs will play at MVC on Nov. 26 at 3:30 p.m.
