San Benito swept its way to victory Thursday at North Salinas, beating the Vikings in the boys and girls at the varsity and junior varsity levels.

The varsity boys won 84-52 and the girls won 100-35. In the JV competition, the boys won 88-48 and the girls edged North Salinas 68-67.

Among the highlights was Lauren Villasenor’s performance in the 400 meters. Going up against Tannia Hernandez, North Salinas’ star middle distance runner, Villasenor ran a 60 flat to edge Hernandez’s 60.2.

“That was a big win,” Haybalers coach Julio Trinidad said. “I don’t think Tannia’s been beaten in TCAL.”

Courtney Allen had a pair of PRs in winning the 800 in 2:25 and the mile in 5:25.

“By the second lap in the mile she destroyed any competition,” Trinidad said. “Most of the time she was running by herself.”

Justine Hunter cleared 32 feet in the triple jump to also beat out Hernandez, and Morgan O’Laughlin rebounded from an off day at the Top 8 Meet to win the discus at 110-2.

“I told (O’Laughlin) that she needs to still let CCS know that she’s out there,” Trinidad said.

The girls also swept the 300-meter hurdles, paced by Lilli Villagomez’s 63.5.

Ryan Shorey breezed to victory in the 400 meters at 51.7, and Chris Korolyuk highlighted a strong day for the sprinters by winning the 100 meters in 11.6.

Josh Schroder easily cleared 15-6 in the pole vault, before just missing at 16-0 1/4 – a mark that would have been a school record.

“It didn’t happen again but I’m thinking 16-0 is right around the corner,” Trinidad said.

With Rigo Vasquez out battling an illness, Eddie Trujillo and Thomas Parcell stepped up their performance to take 1-2 in the mile. Trujillo set the pace at 4:42.9.
