Salinas – Once again, Palma was the top team Monday in a Tri-County Athletic League tournament at Corral de Tierra Country Club.

Only this time, Salinas closed the gap considerably. The Chieftains, paced by Sean Etow’s even-par 50, had 281 strokes over the 13 holes the teams played. The Cowboys were just four strokes behind, led by Ken Munro’s 51.

Meanwhile, Gilroy and San Benito battled it out for the third spot, which the Mustangs took with a 309 to the Haybalers’ 318.

San Benito’s Joey Amaral had the fourth lowest score of the day, a 6-over-par 56. Derell Aton followed at 61.

“Today was kind of a disappointing round,” said ‘Baler coach Andy Parra. “We could have put ourselves in position to get closer to that second position for CCS.”

San Benito, however, is fourth overall with seven points based on a third- and fourth-place finish. Palma leads (first, first) with Gilroy (second, third) second, just one point ahead of Salinas (fourth, second).

The next TCAL match is Monday hosted by North Salinas at Salinas Country Club. With Daylight Savings Time now in effect, the teams are trying to increase the amount of holes they play during league matches.

Meanwhile, the ‘Balers are in action at 2:30pm Thursday against Sobrato at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.
