Holding a 7-2 lead entering the bottom of the third inning, the Anzar Hawks allowed seven runs over the next two frames to host Gonzales and lost 9-7 in a darkness-shortened contest on Tuesday in non-league action.

The game was called prior to the start of the fifth inning after a scheduling conflict postponed the exhibition until 4 p.m., 30 minutes after it was originally slated to start. But Gonzales managed to erase the five-run deficit just in time.

Scoring two runs in the third to cut into Anzar’s lead, the Spartans added a five-spot in the fourth inning after the Hawks committed two errors and allowed five walks.

“That fourth inning killed us,” Anzar manager Andrew Barragan said. “That was totally out of our element.

“We’ve talked about jumping ahead of teams and we did that. We just couldn’t hold that lead.”

Gonzales had just four hits in the four-inning game, but Anzar committed six errors.

“We couldn’t play catch,” Barragan said.

The Hawks grabbed an early lead in the first when Nick Salgado connected on an RBI single that scored Devon Parish from second base, although Gonzales answered in the bottom half to knot the game at 1-all.

The Spartans took a 2-1 lead in the second when Anzar exploded for six runs in the top half of the third after it was aided by three straight walks to load the bases.

Salgado connected on another RBI single with the bases loaded, while Nico Mendoza followed with a fielder’s choice ground out that plated another run.

Tanner McKinney and Niko Hebert both drew a base on balls to score another run each, and Daniel Ornelas hit a 2-RBI single to complete Anzar’s six-run frame.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Gonzales closed out the game with seven unanswered runs.

Mendoza (2.1IP, 2R, 1ER, 3K, 1H) started the game for Anzar, while Parish (.2IP, 2H, 2R, 1K) and Salgado (1IP, 2H, 5R, 3ER, 5BB) finished the game in relief.

Anzar (2-2) will visit Watsonville on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
