Despite trailing St. Francis of Watsonville by a narrow 5-4 margin heading into the fifth inning, the Anzar Hawks allowed nine runs in the visitors half and lost 14-4 in non-league action on Wednesday in San Juan Bautista.

Although the Hawks gave up three runs in the first inning and an additional run in both the second and third innings, they managed to claw their way back into the game behind a pair of home-run blasts.

After Adam Huaracha singled up the middle in the first to score Nico Mendoza, Anzar’s Devon Parish connected on a solo homer in the second to make it 5-2 St. Francis.

Teammate Nick Salgado then hit a two-run homer in the third inning to pull the Hawks to within one run, but the deficit only increased in the top of the fifth inning.

Behind four Anzar errors, St. Francis scored nine times in the fifth to take a 10-run lead. The game was called after the fifth due to the 10-run rule.

Previously on March 5, Anzar defeated the Watsonville high school by a 9-7 margin.

The Hawks are now 6-9 overall.

The team will return to Coastal Athletic League play on Monday when it will host Trinity Christian at 4 p.m. in San Juan Bautista.
