Despite just five hits, the Anzar High baseball team took advantage of 16 walks and posted 15 runs in the process, as the Hawks opened Coastal Athletic League play with a convincing 15-2 victory against defending league champion Anchorpoint Christian on Wednesday in San Juan Bautista.

The Warriors plated two runs in the third inning, but were otherwise shutout for the remainder of the game, limited to just three hits.

Meanwhile, Anzar scored one run in the first off a Nico Mendoza RBI single, two more in the second off a 2-RBI double from Devon Parish, then broke the game open in the third with a seven-spot that pushed the Hawks out to a 10-2 lead.

Parish, who was 2 of 3, finished the game with two RBI and four runs scored.

“We played our game,” Anzar manager Andrew Barragan said. “Everybody put the ball in play, and the thing I was happy about was that we were selective.”

Selective to the tune of 16 walks and just one strikeout.

“Just put the ball in play,” Barragan added.

After Anzar scored seven times in the third inning, highlighted by a 2-RBI single from Nick Salgado with the bases loaded, the Hawks added five more runs in the fourth behind six walks.

Tanner McKinney, who was 2 of 3 with a double and three RBI, connected on a 2-RBI double with the bases loaded in the fourth inning as well.

“We had runners in scoring position and we were able to bring them home,” Barragan said.

Atop the hill, Nick Salgado (2IP, 2R, 2H, 2K, 2BB) started the game for Anzar, while teammates Adam Huaracha (2IP, 2H, 0R, 1K, 1BB) and Parish (1IP, 0R, 0H, 1K, 0BB) finished it in relief.

The win evens Anzar’s overall record at 3-3, 1-0 in the CAL. The Hawks will meet up with Anchorpoint Christian again on Friday in Gilroy at 4 p.m. Nico Mendoza will start for Anzar.
