SANTA CLARA

After opening with a 5-4 victory against Monterey on Monday, the San Benito Haybalers dropped their semifinal matchup to Mitty 4-1 on Thursday night in the Mike Hazlett Tournament at Santa Clara’s Washington Park.

A close 2-1 ball game turned into a three-run deficit for the Balers after Mitty tacked on two runs in the sixth. San Benito’s Trevor Fabing had two of the team’s four hits.

The loss positions the Balers (1-2) in the third- and fourth-place consolation game on Saturday. San Benito will square off against Santa Cruz, which lost 2-1 to Valley Christian on Thursday.

First pitch is 4:30 p.m. at Washington Park.

Meanwhile, Valley Christian and Mitty will meet in an all-WCAL tournament championship on Saturday night.
