The San Benito Haybalers defeated Monterey 5-4 on Monday night to open the Mike Hazlett Tournament at Santa Clara’s Washington Park.

The victory not only evens San Benito’s record at 1-1 on the early season, but advances the Balers to Wednesday night’s semifinal round where they will be up against Mitty at 7:30 p.m.

Darin Gillies will start for San Benito on Wednesday night.

Win or lose, the Balers will be playing on Saturday in Santa Clara as well. A win over Mitty on Wednesday would propel San Benito into the tournament championship on Saturday against the winner between Valley Christian and Santa Cruz, while a loss to Mitty would place the Balers into the consolation game.
