Nick Salgado tossed a complete game one-hitter to lead the Anzar baseball team past visiting Marina 6-0 on Tuesday, and the Hawks improved to 3-0 in Coastal Athletic League play as a result.
Salgado threw seven innings and just 94 pitches to earn the victory, striking out 11 Mariners in the process.
“He was dealing,” manager Andrew Barragan said of his Hawks, who improve to 5-3 overall.
The one hit allowed by Salgado came in the third inning, and nearly led to run. Salgado walked the first batter he faced to open the frame, but after the Marina player stole second base, Salgado struck out the next two batters.
The fourth batter of the inning drove a single up the middle and into center field, breaking up the no-hitter. But center fielder Devon Parish threw home on the play to get the runner at the plate, preserving the shutout.
Meanwhile, Anzar plated all the runs it would need to earn the victory in the second inning. After Nico Mendoza singled on and stole second, Adam Huaracha singled him home to put the Hawks up 1-0.
Anzar made it 3-0 an inning later with a two-out rally. After Salgado doubled on and Mendoza trailed with an RBI single, Daniel Ornelas connected on an RBI single to push Mendoza home from second base.
With two runners on in the fourth inning, Devon Parish’s bunt single scored Niko Hebert from third, and Blake Selsor followed with a sac fly to score Mark Rania.
The Hawks made it 6-0 in the sixth when Reno May delivered an RBI single to right field, scoring Hebert.
Anzar is now off for spring break and won’t return to the diamond until April 5, when it will compete in a tournament at Atwater. League play won’t resume until April 9 with the team’s second scheduled game against Marina.
