The Anzar Hawks trailed by scores of 4-2 in the third and 7-6 in the fourth before exploding for seven runs en route to a seemingly comfortable 18-8 victory over visiting Marina in Coastal Athletic League action on Tuesday.
It was Anzar’s third straight win over the Mariners. But having previously defeated them by scores of 6-0 and 12-2 alredy this season, Anzar manager Andrew Barragan said Tuesday’s win was the most difficult.
“They were night and day since the last time we played them,” Barragan said. “They came to play.”
Anzar pocketed runs in each and every inning, and grabbed a 10-run lead with five runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The game was called in the sixth due to the 10-run rule.
Devon Parish went 2 of 4 with a triple and three runs scored, Tanner McKinney went 2 of 4 with three runs scored, Blake Selsor was 3 of 5 with a pair of doubles and a pair of runs scored, and Brian Fredrickson went 2 of 4 with a double and a run.
Atop the mound, Nico Mendoza (4.2IP, 4H, 4ER, 4K, 2BB, 1HBP), Devon Parish (1.1IP, 5BB, 3K, 3H, 4R) and Nick Salgado (1IP, 2K) combined for the seven-hitter, while Parish picked up the win.
The Hawks are now 7-0 in the CAL and 9-9 overall. They hold a two-game lead in the loss column over Trinity Christian with two games remaining. However, both of Anzar’s remaining games are against Trinity Christian.
The two teams will meet on Monday at Cal State University — Monterey Bay, with a first pitch at 4 p.m.
While the Hawks previously topped Trinity Christian 11-4 on April 19, recent injuries and academics have limited Barragan’s bench to just one player.
“We’re trying to hold this together,” the manager said. “But we should be OK.”
