Anzar fell by a 13-11 margin to the Watsonville school, its first defeat in six games. But Tuesday’s win over Marina, in which the Hawks led 7-2 through just three innings of play, acted as the perfect antidote.
Mendoza threw 91 pitches in six innings against the Mariners, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. He struck out five batters, walked three, and hit one player.
Two runs was all Mendoza surrendered up until the fifth inning, though, at which point Anzar was already playing with a comfortable lead.
The Hawks plated four runs in the first inning, capitalizing on three hits and three walks. Reno May erased an early 2-0 deficit for Anzar when he connected on a two-RBI double in the home half of the first, while both Mendoza and Aaron Grimes trailed with RBI singles to stake the Hawks to a 4-2 lead.
Grimes finished 3 of 4 at the plate with two runs scored.
In the second inning, Anzar extended its lead when two walks drawn set up a Mendoza RBI single up the middle, while an inning later, the Hawks tacked on two more runs behind a sac fly from Brian Fredrickson and a two-out RBI double from Blake Selsor.
Selsor finished with three runs scored and two walks, while as a team, Anzar took advantage of four Marina errors and six walks issued.
Reliever Josh Holtzclaw pitched the seventh frame for Anzar. He added another run in the sixth inning on an RBI single to right field, then tossed the final frame, allowing two runs on one hit. He struck out two and walked two as well.
Anzar’s win on Tuesday marked the third victory over Marina this season. The Hawks previously trumped the Mariners 4-1 on March 29 and 7-3 on April 8.
Anzar is off until next Wednesday, April 27, when it will travel to North Monterey County for a non-league matchup with the Condors. First pitch is 4 p.m.
The Hawks will return to CAL play one day later, though, when they will visit Monterey for a key league meeting with Trinity Christian.
