A two-run sixth inning — the go-ahead run coming off a wild pitch — lifted host Lincoln past Anzar 6-5 in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday in San Jose.

Following a four-run fourth inning, the Hawks carried a one-run lead to the sixth. Coaches on both sides decided the sixth inning, and not the seventh, would be the last inning due to darkness.

Lincoln led off the inning with a walk, and the runner eventually scored off an RBI double. Later, Anzar had just one out and was forced to walk to load the bases, leading to the game-ending wild pitch.

“That was a heartbreaker,” Anzar manager Andrew Barragan said.

“But we looked good. I was impressed because we were down 4-1 going into the fourth inning.”

While the Hawks too scored one run in the fourth off a wild pitch, two runs were plated when Devon Parish’s grounder to the left side resulted in an error, scoring two.

Tanner McKinney scored in the first inning off a Nico Mendoza fielder’s choice.

Niko Hebert connected on both a double and a triple in the loss, which puts Anzar at 0-1 on the early season.

The Hawks will have their home opener on Friday when Saint Francis of Watsonville visits San Juan Bautista. First pitch is 3:30 p.m.
