A two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning by senior Jordan Holler proved to be the difference as the Gilroy High baseball team prevailed over rival San Benito 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon in Hollister.
Not only did the Mustangs (17-8-1, 13-4) end an eight-game losing streak against the Balers, but they also ensured themselves a second-place finish in the Tri-County Athletic League and a sure spot in next week’s Central Coast Section playoffs.
The Balers (19-6, 15-2), meanwhile, claimed the TCAL title outright with a win over Alisal on Tuesday.
Seeding for the Division I bracket will be decided Saturday.
The Balers jumped out in front in the first inning with three runs in the first inning, but Gilroy bounced right back in the top of the second with three runs of its own.
The Balers regained the advantage with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Mustangs took it right back in the fourth, scoring twice to make it 5-4.
The back-and-forth saga continued as the Balers tied it in the bottom of the fourth and went up by one run in the bottom of the fifth before Holler’s game winner sailed over the center-field fence.
The two teams will close out the regular season against each other today, Thursday, back in Hollister at 4 p.m.
