The Watsonville Aggies dropped their opening contest to Mobile, Ala., 16-7 in pool play on Thursday to kick-off the Senior Babe Ruth 16- to 18-year-old World Series in Newark, Ohio.

Alabama (2-0) plated runs in every inning but the fourth, including a five-run first inning to open the contest between the two teams.

Watsonville (0-1) battled back with two runs apiece in the first, second and fifth innings. The Aggies even came within two runs of Alabama at the end of the second inning, trailing 6-4. But the Watsonville ball club was unable to close the distance any further.

Each team had eight hits, but Watsonville was charged with three errors and issued seven walks.

Alabama, representing the Southeast, won its opener on Wednesday when it defeated host Licking County, Ohio, by a 14-4 margin.

The Aggies, which boast several players from nearby areas, including Hollister’s Kyle Zozaya, Justin Schlie and Ricky Garcia, are making their first appearance in the Senior Babe Ruth World Series since 2005.

Watsonville will play in four pool-play games. Representing the Pacific Southwest, the Aggies will square off again on Friday against Ottumwa, Iowa (0-1), which is representing the Midwest Plains region.

First pitch is 4:30 p.m. at The National Babe Ruth Complex in Newark, Ohio.
