The Balers used a strong second half to pull away from Seaside for a 64-40 victory Wednesday to win their third game of the year.

The win gives the Balers a 3-2 record heading into the 32nd Annual Gilroy Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament on Dec. 15.

In Wednesday’s game, the Balers continued to struggle on the offensive end by rushing shots and not running set plays, head coach David Kaplansky said.

Down by a point at halftime, Kaplansky decided to put a bigger emphasis on offensive set plays to slow down the offense and get better shots, he said. The change allowed the Balers to spread the court and gain open shots.

A bigger key, though, was a bigger rebound production – giving the team second chances.

“We gave ourselves more opportunities,” Kaplansky said.

Down one, San Benito went on a 25-8 run in the third quarter to take control of the game.

The defense swarmed the ball and the offense took care of its opportunities, Kaplansky said.

“The kids played great in the second half,” he said. “The really settled down and started to play well.”

For the first time this year, the Balers had four players score double digits. Jordan Belton led the way for San Benito with 20 points from the floor. Isaiah Acfalle added 15 points, Hyram Miskin added 11 points and Jacob Tonascia contribute 10 points in the win.

San Benito’s next game is Dec. 15 against Aptos in the first round of the 32nd Annual Gilroy Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament.

“It should be a good game,” Kaplansky said.
