Anzar was limited to two hits for the second straight day and the Hawks opened the Mission Trail Athletic League baseball season with a 7-0 loss to Soledad.
“We hit it hard to them, they just made the plays the plays,” Anzar coach Andrew Barragan said. “(Soledad’s) pitcher, Eric Garza, he was pretty good.”
Hawks’ senior Scott Benson pitched well, going the distance and striking out nine while allowing only five hits. But four Anzar errors significantly help the Aztecs, as five of their runs were unearned.
“The defense let us down today,” said Barragan, whose team had played error-free ball a day earlier in a 3-2 loss to Anchorpoint Christian.
Soledad spread its attack around, scoring a run in the first and adding two in the third, three in the fourth and another in the sixth.
Adrian Monroy and Massimo Marra-Biggs each singled for the only hits for the Hawks, who did show more patience at the plate with five walks.
“We were a little more selective at the plate,” Barragan said. “But we just couldn’t get the runners over.”
Anzar will get its chance to avenge the loss when it travels to face Soledad at 4pm Friday.
“The team feels pretty confident,” Barragan said. “I think it’ll be a little closer on Friday.”
