San Benito High School District trustees have indicated support for funding a new weight room and wrestling gym while putting off other major building projects under consideration.

Trustees at Wednesday night’s meeting directed district staff to come back with a plan for the weight room and wrestling gym, said Jim Koenig, district director of finance and operations. The board next meets Feb. 13.

The new facilities would be built south of the school’s gym where outdoor basketball courts currently stand. The district also would then build new outdoor basketball courts – in a vacant lot between the old and new campuses – to replace the current set.

Costs would include an estimated $3.54 million for construction of the weight room and wrestling gym, and an additional $676,000 to replace the basketball courts, according to district documents.

For now, the district will put off other building projects previously broached such as a football stadium, a dance classroom, an intercom system, a library and an auditorium.
