Four local teenagers discovered a dead body in a tree along the San Benito River bed off Nash Road on Thursday.

Sheriff’s Department investigators did not rule by press time whether the death was a homicide or a suicide. They also did not know the identity of the male, who was “approximately 16,” according to Lt. Pat Turturici.

As investigators left the crime scene, as one officer called it, Turturici said a cause of death had not been determined. He said he would release more information Friday morning.

“We’re starting from scratch,” he said.

The four boys, all minors in their mid to late teens, found the body and called authorities at about 5:15 p.m. They were questioned and released to their parents.

According to sheriff’s officers, the body was hanging in a tree adjacent to apartment complexes on the 800 block of Nash Road – about a quarter mile from San Benito High School.

A resident of the neighborhood, who did not want to be named, said he had seen many teenagers in recent days walking by his house along the sloping dirt path toward the area where the body was found.

Investigators arrived shortly after the call came in at about 5:30 p.m. They examined the area for about an hour.

If anyone has information about the body or cause of death, call Lt. Pat Turturici at 636-4080.
