San Francisco – Barry Bonds’ 700th home run blast will be put up for public auction beginning Oct. 18.
Daniel Horowitz, the attorney for Steve Williams, the Pacifica man who ended up with the historic blast at SBC Park in September, said the ball would be placed on a new auction site at Overstock.com, with bids beginning at $1, from Oct. 18-27.
Williams, 26, got the ball after a mad scramble in the left-center bleachers. Timothy Murphy, a 40-year-old Giants fan from Hollister, has sued Williams, saying he rightfully owned the ball because he had it locked behind his knees while at the bottom of a scrum before Williams swiped it.
“I am aware that the ball is going to be put up,” Murphy told the Free Lance Tuesday evening. “That still doesn’t in any way affect my legal persuits for the ball. As always, I’d like to thank my family and friends, the people of Hollister and even strangers who have encouraged and supported me to do the right thing. The truth will come out in the end.”
Free Lance calls to Murphy’s San Jose-based attorney, Joseph Scanlan, were not returned late Tuesday afternoon.
A judge had refused to hold up the sale, freeing Williams to sell it. Attorneys for Murphy said they are continuing with the lawsuit, and are suing Williams to obtain the proceeds from the ball’s sale.
